PORT OF MAURITIUS

PORT LOUIS

The port of Mauritius is located in the heart of the island’s capital, Port Louis. The City owes its very existence and prosperity to its port activities and today it assumes the role of the economic capital city. The balance between city and port activities is a real priority for the government and has allowed the implementation of many development and restructuring works to modernise the port and its seafronts.

The port currently has a dredged area of around 150 hectares and has reached a total of 11.1 million tonnage handling through all its activities over 18 months (January 2016 to June 2017) due not only to the container ship industry, but also the cruise industry, fishing and bunkering.

In 2016, the port was designated as the most “business-friendly” port in Africa owing to the government’s determination to transform Port Louis Harbour as the leading port in container traffic. Renovation works have helped built a 800m long wharf to handle larger container ships.

The development of the cruise industry is facilitated by improvement projects such as the construction of a cruise terminal that accommodates inter-island as well as international passengers. The Fishing industry is also a priority sector with the proposed construction of a new fishing port at Vieux Grand Port.

The oil cargo traffic market is also expanding, and the port accounts for a total of 547,908 tonnes from January 2016 to June 2017. Owing to its strategic position, Port Louis is fast becoming an oil transshipment hub in the region.

Port Louis Harbour has been transformed into an important regional hub, creating real opportunities for neighboring ports from the increased generation of maritime traffic.
