PORT OF REUNION ISLAND
The Grand Port Maritime de la Réunion is located in Le Port commune, north west of Réunion Island. It combines the functions of maritime terminal, commercial port, naval base, marina bay and fish landing station, asserting it as an effective and efficient strategic compound of maritime trade in the Indian Ocean.
The eastern side, Le Port Est, is dedicated to container, bulk and oil transshipment, and also hosts Roll on Roll off (RORO) and cruise ships. The port area of 175 hectares includes 53 hectares sheltered body of water. The western side, Le Port Ouest, combines the infrastructure devoted to high seas fishing, the naval base, the bitumen, sugar, cement and gas terminals. It spreads over 107 hectares with 37 hectares dredged area.
Since 2012, the port has become a state-owned public entity and its competitiveness in the maritime field is steadily increasing. The 2014-2018 strategic plan generated more than 5.5 million tonnes of transshipments in 2017, an increase of 7% over the previous year. The port is the second largest in Europe’s outermost regions and is France’s fourth largest container port.
The port is currently preparing its 2019-2023 strategic plan to assert its competitiveness and attractiveness. Infrastructure development, automation and computerisation of port tools and practices are the focus of the coming strategic plan.
